Story Behind the Art: For centuries, Tibetan rug weaving has served both everyday life and decorative expression, drawing from a rich visual language of geometric motifs, auspicious symbols, mythical creatures, and nature-inspired forms—each design layered with color, meaning, and tradition. The craft experienced a major turning point after 1959, when the Tibetan diaspora spread into Nepal and India, helping spark a new commercial chapter for rug making.
By the 1970s, Tibetan rugs had gained strong international recognition, and Nepalese artisans—often trained alongside Tibetan refugees—became essential in preserving the technique while pushing it forward. One of the defining features of these rugs is the signature slit-loop method known as the Tibetan knot, which creates a pile celebrated for its depth, texture, and exceptional softness. Today’s Tibetan, Nepalese, and Indo-Tibetan rugs span a wide spectrum—from refreshed traditional icons like branching florals and snow lions to modern, free-form designs that seamlessly connect heritage craftsmanship with contemporary interiors.
